Til' Death Do Us Part
Q: I just got engaged, what is the first step in planning my wedding?
A: The smartest thing to do is plan a budget. Talk with your fiance' and see how much money you have, or can save to spend on the wedding.
The next step is to figure out an approximate number of people that will be attending. The average wedding can cost $30- 50k dollars. Start shopping caterers to get an idea of the price per head they will be charging. Remember that off season has better savings. Your food cost will take up most of your budget but shouldn't exceed 40 percent. Many brides fall in love with a catering hall and then have to hire the cheapest photographer they can find. Try and keep all of your vendors on the same level of quality.
Q: In booking a photographer what should I look for?
A: Well, get references from past brides and don't be afraid to ask. This is the biggest day of your life and you want to hire the best people you can afford. Find out what their back up policy is in case of emergency. Ask to see their certificates of liability insurance. Do your homework!
Q: I met with two different DJ's and one I really like, but he is twice as much?
A: The old saying is you get what you pay for. Most DJ's are part time entertainers but there are a few companies out there that will be more expensive than an independent. Things that are important are professionalism, back up entertainers in case of emergency, back up equipment and insurance. The cost of doing business does demand a certain price and if the difference is that much you might not be getting exactly the same from both DJ's.
Q: How can I cut corners to stretch my budget?
A: Well the first thing is to spend the money on what matters most to you. Some brides want to spend more on pictures of their day while others care more on flowers. The two things your guests will remember the most are the food and the entertainment. If you are creative you can make your own invitations, centerpieces and various other things. Make the day work for you and your budget. Don't over spend in one area and skimp in another.
