Our beliefs are often handed to us through the way we are raised, or by society around us. Learn how to believe in something right now.
Believe in Me: I love the song ‘Mr. Jones’ by the Counting Crows. There is a sort of desperation and hope that permeates the song. My favorite lines:
Believe in me
Help me believe in anything
I want to be someone
who believes
He is begging to believe, in anything, as he wants to believe in something! Belief is very powerful. What we believe to be possible or true will help create our life. It directs how we behave. Many of our beliefs are hand-me-downs that you don’t even think about. We get them from our society, family, friends. They help us to see what is possible or not.
We borrow or adopt the beliefs of others and rely on what they see within us. When we are children, this support typically comes from our parents or a favored relative. They believe we can jump off the high dive at the local pool, they believe we can ride a bike, evidenced by their patience running behind us and letting go as we build momentum. I know my Dad’s belief that I could waterski was the only reason I kept trying, he brought that boat around again and again to give me a chance at getting up. I did finally learn!
On the flip side, adopting the beliefs of others can have a limiting affect. There are those unspoken beliefs, around, say, money. If you come from a middle class family there may be unspoken beliefs about how much money ‘we’ make. And, what type of jobs ‘we’ do. They can impact what you believe to be possible for your life.
As we grow to be adults, we most likely will not have to borrow our parents unwavering faith, in both our potential and our limits. We can decide what we believe to be true based on our experiences. For many, there is a crossroads in life when our beliefs are challenged and our decisions will define what is possible for us personally. When we do this, it is a game changer.
When you can create and direct the voice in your head that overrides those hand-me-down beliefs and allows you to believe in something bigger for you, you have your own personal coach. You are the inspiration for you!
If you are interested in updating your beliefs and imagining what is possible for you…. Here are some quick steps to get you started.
Dream and Visualize: Get really clear on what you want. What vision do you have for you? Is this the year you start your business, write a novel, run a marathon? Visualize it. Try to connect to the emotions that it brings – follow the thoughts that give you the most positive response (even if they are not as logical as your mind would like).
Get Certain: Certainty and belief work very closely together. When we are certain we want it and we are moving in that direction, we have to believe that we can have it. This is helpful after you visualize, you think yes, I really want it and I know I can have it. Even if you only believe it 50%, that is enough to get started. I like to look and study people who are already where I want to be – there are great stories of success all around us to help see what is possible.
Get Inspired. I listen to anything positive that I can. I rarely watch the news or TV as it is not inspiring. I look for like minds, like the writers of Identity Magazine! For example, if you want to hear more about getting certain, Tony Robbins, one of the more proclaimed motivational guru’s of our time, talks about having certainty in this quick video.
Action: Once you are certain and believe it to be true and possible. You can take action, do anything that puts energy around this goal or vision. Everyday do one thing. It happens when we least expect it, we get that burst of inspiration that seems to come from nowhere, and provides you with an idea for action. Those are the actions you want to take- inspired action will build.
I believe ‘You’re Gonna Be a Big Star’…..

What have you accepted within your life, physically and/or mentally? What are you still working on accepting?
I have accepted that I need help from people around me. I love to be self sufficient, but the fact of the matter is to do and be all that I want to be, I must partner with others.
What have you learn to appreciate about yourself and/or within your life, physically and mentally? What are you still working on to appreciate?
When it comes to getting help, I learned to appreciate the wonderful talents and gifts other people have and by working with them, I get to be a part of their expression in the world. My constant work is asking for help when I feel overwhelmed. Why is that so hard?
