Four Tips for Boosting Your Mental Health

If you want to live a long life, you have to think about making adjustments to your lifestyle that make you healthier. That might mean quitting cigarettes or dropping a few pounds, but it’s not just your physical health you need to think about.

Your mental health is just as, if not more, important.

Four Tips for Boosting Your Mental Health

Whether you’re feeling a little blue or you just want to stay as mentally healthy as you can for as long as possible, the tips on this list will help, no matter where you are in your mental health journey.

Take a Break

Many of us are go-go-go all the time. From working eight or nine hours at work every day to completing chores around the house and dropping the kids off at soccer practice, it can feel like there’s no time for you to take a break.

It’s important to make time for breaks anyway. From little 5-minute breaks throughout your day to spending 20 minutes doing your favorite hobby, breaks are extremely important for your mental health.

Big breaks count too! Take an airplane to a far-flung destination or rent an RV and go on a cross-country adventure. Your mental health will thank you for it!

Eat the Right Food

You probably spend a lot of time thinking about your diet when it means losing weight, but did you know your diet can have a huge impact on your mental health too?

Some studies have shown an 11-percent decrease in depression among adults who eat a healthy diet. Not to mention, the right food can make you feel less sluggish and more alert during the day.

The question is, what kind of food is best for mental health? Focus on eating foods that include:

    • Fatty fish, like salmon and mackerel
    • Complex carbs, like whole-wheat bread and beans
    • Lean protein, like chicken and turkey
    • Leafy greens, like spinach and broccoli
  • Fermented foods, like yogurt with active cultures

Reach Out

In today’s world, it’s easy to think you’re more connected to others than you have ever been before. That’s not the case.

Social media doesn’t connect us to others in meaningful ways. Instead, you have to make face-to-face interactions part of your everyday life. That means reaching out to a friend and planning to get together for lunch or stopping by the neighbor’s for a quick chat. You’ll boost their mood, and in turn, you’ll boost yours as well.

Identify Unhealthy Thoughts

Learning how to deal with negative thoughts is a skill everyone should learn. From challenging negative thoughts to breaking negative thought patterns with thought stopping, there are many ways you can take back control of your brain. When you do, you’ll reduce your chances of experiencing depression and anxiety.

It’s important to take care of your physical health, but don’t forget about your mental health! An integrated approach to well-being can be achieved when you add the mental health ideas on this list to the physical lifestyle choices you make every day. Don’t forget you can search and talk to a therapist in your area.

1. What have you accepted within your life, physically and/or mentally? Additionally, what are you still working on accepting? Now, we’re not talking about resignation, rather stepping into, embraced, and owned.

I’ve accepted and embraced the uncertainty of a nomadic lifestyle. While my home and heart are in St. Louis, I travel and work for most of the year. It brings its own set of challenges, including loneliness, but they’re challenges I’m willing to accept.

2. What have you learned to appreciate about yourself and/or within your life, physically and mentally? On the other hand OR in contrast, are there elements of who you are that you’re still working on appreciating?

I’ve accepted and embraced the fact that, because I approach things in an outside-the-box way, I don’t always get something right on the first try. I honestly love learning from those failures.

3. What is one of your most rewarding achievements in life? Tell us not only what makes YOU most proud but also share the goals and dreams that you still have.

I’m most proud of the fact that I can do what I love while seeing the country and meeting new people. I’m self sufficient and doing work that I find rewarding. In time, I would like to extend my digital nomad lifestyle to working around the world– not just the country.

4. Of course, we all have imperfections, or so we think. In truth, we are all perfectly imperfect. What are your not-so-perfect ways? Likewise, what imperfections and quirks create who you are–your Identity?

I sometimes bite off more than I can chew, which leads to disappointing others. I’m ambitious to a fault, so I need to slow down and realize what’s idealism and what’s realistic, in terms of what I can accomplish.

5. “I Love My…” is an outlet for you to appreciate and express all the positive traits that make you…well…YOU! In fact, sharing what you love about yourself will make you smile, feel empowered, and uplift your spirit and soul. (We assure you!)
