How You Make Your House Appear a Little Less Cookie-Cutter

Is it time for home upgrades?

There’s something about driving through suburban neighborhoods that feels, well, repetitive. You know, the ones—rows of houses that look like they’ve been copied and pasted from one to the next.

Yes, where every roof, every door, every window—identical. It’s like being stuck in a sea of sameness, where each house blends into the next, and nothing stands out.

But what’s the worst part?

Well, your house could be one of them! So, what if you’re dealing with that? Well, unless you live in an HOA (and hopefully you’re not) then you should look into giving your house a facelift! But how can you break this cookie-cutter cycle with your house? Well, here’s exactly what you need to know!

Upgrade Your Roof for a Fresh Look

One of the biggest ways to break out of the cookie-cutter mold is by changing up the roof. Yes, you read that right, just by hiring a roofing company and having your roof checked and even replaced could probably be one of the only changes that you might actually need.

So, most houses stick with standard shingles. This is usually what’s used when it comes to suburban cheaply made houses. But it’s so bring, right?

So, a different material, like metal, tile, or even slate, can dramatically change the entire appearance of your house. Plus, newer roofing materials often come with energy-efficient perks (or, for example, getting a metal roof over those cheap shingles).

Paint Your Siding

The siding of your house covers most of its exterior, so changing it up can have a big impact. Instead of sticking with one material or color, consider mixing things up with different textures or shades.

Most homeowners paint the siding, which usually makes the biggest difference. For example, if all the houses around you have white siding or red brick, why not paint them another color, like navy blue or green?

Add Statement Doors and Windows

Another easy way to make your home stand out is by upgrading your doors and windows. Again, this requires either you or a professional to paint it, but it’s worth it.

So, you could paint your front door a bold and vibrant color, or paint the trim of your window something fun too. But depending on your budget, you might want to consider adding shutters or decorative trim around your windows for a more custom look.

Again, it’s up to you, but the goal is to make your house look different (and since it’s cookie-cutter, it might help neighbors see the potential for their houses, too).

Elevate with Landscaping

Landscaping is one of the easiest ways to make your home look different from the others on your street. So, cookie-cutter homes mean that the lawn is the same shape and size for all the homes.

So, just having a well-thought-out garden, unique trees, or even custom planters can give your yard a whole new feel.

Ideally, it would help if you considered adding a winding walkway, a new patio, or even an outdoor seating area to give your exterior more charm. It’s really up to you, but you could even fill your lawn with plants; even that just makes it look entirely different from the rest of the neighborhood.
