Building a Home, Building Patience

I’ve experienced imposter syndrome and so has pretty much every Mompreneur going after what she wants.

Just like motherhood. Just like business. Building this home is another metaphor for life

They don’t tell you this part.
The part where building a home isn’t just about lumber, paint swatches, and move-in dates. It’s about riding an emotional rollercoaster you didn’t sign up for—and learning to coach yourself through every drop, twist, and delay.

When we first broke ground, I imagined we’d be settled before the twins started middle school. I pictured first-day photos on our new front porch, backpacks slung over their shoulders, a moment wrapped in fresh beginnings. But here we are—still not in, still waiting, still navigating setback after setback.

The truth? It’s been one of the most challenging self-coaching seasons of my life.

The Reality Check

On social media, you see the dream homes—the experts making it look easy, the polished tours with perfect finishes. My husband and I? Far from experts. We’re learning as we go, fumbling through decisions, and facing the reality that not everything is coming out the way we envisioned.

It’s been messy. It’s been stressful. And yet… it’s been an adventure.

This house build has tested every piece of my A-Game philosophy:

  • Self-awareness to notice when my frustration is less about the house and more about my need for control.
  • Active self-acceptance to sit in the mess without pretending everything is fine.
  • Agency to advocate for what we need with the builders, even when it feels “annoying.”
  • Appreciation to pause and remember: we get to build a home. That’s a privilege, even on the hard days.
  • Adaptability to pivot when delays or mistakes show up—because they always do.
  • Anchored self-trust to know we’ll figure it out, even when the timeline doesn’t match our plan.

The Lesson Hidden in the Dust

What I keep coming back to is this: A house is just a structure. What makes it a home are the people and the energy you bring into it.

So while my impatience flares when walls go up in the wrong place, or when we’re told “two more weeks” for the tenth time, I remind myself—gratitude is the grounding force.

I can be frustrated and grateful at the same time.
I can be disappointed in the process and still hopeful for the future.
I can acknowledge that this isn’t the timeline I wanted—and still choose to see the abundance in what we have right now.

Balancing It All

Just like motherhood. Just like business. Building this home is another metaphor for life: imperfect, unpredictable, and still worth celebrating.

When we finally walk through those doors, it won’t be about the delays or the stress. It will be about creating memories, filling the walls with laughter, and shaping it into a place that reflects who we are.

That’s the audacity to achieve: to keep going, to keep believing, and to keep being grateful—even in the in-between.
